Holding tells WI administrators: 'Clean up your act'

Fri, Apr 26, '24

Michael Holding

WEST INDIES fast-bowling legend and former commentator Michael Holding has called on Cricket West Indies (CWI) administrators and the administrators of the various territorial boards to “clean up their act” to push the Caribbean game forward.

Speaking virtually during the morning session at the Caricom Regional Cricket Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain on Thursday, Holding, known in his playing days as the “Whispering Death,” made a passionate and emotional call for more transparency and better practices by the regional bodies.

Holding said he was “depressed” after reading CWI’s audited financial statements for 2022/23, as it seemed to him there were several irregularities and even fraudulent activities which were recorded in the document, which was unveiled last month.

“I was fortunate, or some people would say unfortunate, to set my eyes on the most recent audit that was done on the CWI. And when I read that report, I can't say I was shocked because I've heard so many stories,” Holding said.

CWI backs Guyana’s push for World Super League T20 tourney

Fri, Apr 26, '24

CWI

GUYANA President Dr Irfan Ali has announced Guyana’s plans to launch a World Super League Twenty/20 tournament in the near future — a tournament which he hopes will serve as a replacement to the now defunct Champions League T20.

Ali made the announcement during his virtual presentation on day one of the April 25-26 Caricom Regional Cricket Conference — Reinvigorating West Indies Cricket — at the Hyatt Regency, PoS. If the vision of Ali and the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) comes to life, the World Super League tournament will see Guyana hosting eight of the world’s best franchise teams in an exciting invitational competition over a week or two-week period.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) CEO Johnny Grave confirmed the regional body’s receipt of a proposal from Guyana, and he says CWI will now submit its own proposal to the International Cricket Council (ICC) in early May with a view to hosting the inaugural edition of the Wolrd Super Leauge later this year.

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which will host the 12th edition of its tournament from August 29 to October 6, has given the go-ahead for the GCB and CWI in its quest to launch the World Super League.

“We’re working with the GCB to try and find a suitable window that works for both Guyana and West Indies cricket,” Grave told Newsday at the regional cricket conference.

Bassarath: TTCB will support recommendations from Caricom conference

Fri, Apr 26, '24

Trinidad & Tobago

TRINIDAD and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) president Azim Bassarath says the local cricket body will be willing to support the recommendations that will be made at the end of the April 25-26 Caricom Regional Cricket Conference — Reinvigorating West Indies Cricket — which is being held at the Hyatt Regency in PoS.

Bassarath made the remarks during day one of the conference on Thursday as he fielded questions from the media.

“Some of the things that were raised and the recommendations on the floor from the prime ministers, I think Cricket West Indies (CWI) has to give it serious consideration,” said Bassarath, who also serves as CWI vice-president.

“I’m pretty confident Dr (Kishore) Shallow, as president of CWI, will move in that direction. As a shareholder of CWI, the TTCB, we will do whatever it takes to support the recommendations.

“It depends on the other territorial boards who have to support it, and if they want to see the cricket move forward, they will of course support it.”

‘We have to own cricket in the Americas’ – President Ali to CARICOM

Fri, Apr 26, '24

Guyana

Considering the rapid development of cricket in the Americas as a “growing threat to West Indies Cricket”, President Dr. Irfaan Ali urged Caribbean stakeholders to push to become the overarching governing body for the sport in the Americas.

“We have threats with the growing North American cricket, which can bring in a lot more fans and a lot more revenue. I believe we need to examine whether we can move the West Indies Cricket Board [Cricket West Indies] to the American Cricket Board because we have to now work toward owning cricket in the Americas.

“How do we develop a strategy where West Indies cricket becomes the owner of cricket in the Americas?” the current Chair of CARICOM passionately expressed on Thursday while attending the two-day CARICOM Regional Cricket Conference in Trinidad and Tobago virtually.

New JCA boss wants to rebuild local cricket

Fri, Apr 26, '24

Jamaica

Newly elected President of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), Dr Donovan Bennett, says it will be all about cricket during his tenure after his comprehensive victory at the polls over Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven following the election of officers for at the JCA’s annual general meeting held at the Jamaica Conference Centre yesterday.

After a lengthy delay due to the finalisation of the voters’ list, Bennett secured 67 votes to Heaven’s 30 after 97 delegates cast their votes.

From the outset, there was an air of confidence in the Bennett camp, and whispers of a landslide victory punctuated the conference centre, which, in the end, proved to be true as the votes were tabulated and read out by outgoing secretary Dianne Campbell.

Bennett, who has more than 40 years of dedicated service to the game, told journalists following his victory that his immediate plan is to focus on youth cricket, which will ultimately bear fruit and bring back success to the nation’s cricket.

“If we are going to rebuild Jamaica’s cricket, we have to start at the bottom and work our way up, and I think the voters thought they needed someone with the proper knowledge of youth cricket and how to administer it,” said Bennett.
