ABR Daily Update-April 15, 2024-Getting on with it. 🐻

Weather: 80F (27C) Humidity 46%, Sunny 🌞

It’s a hot one! Our cubs don’t care; they’re in climate-controlled buildings practicing being bears. Everything they need to know is preprogrammed, so all we do is give them food, shelter, time… and air-conditioning. Otherwise, we stay out of their way and let them get on with it.

Casper and Shadow are instructing us on the latest moves in Cub Wrestling. We thought we knew them all, but the "resting-on-your-side pummel" is a new one on us. The brothers are eating Cubby Porridge made of fresh goat’s milk, Fox Valley Bear Milk Replacement Formula, and Gerber baby rice cereal. It’s the breakfast of champions! 🐻🐻🥣🥣

The cubs next door were up late, trashing their room and each other. Jellybean, the largest cub in residence, is a pretty good climber, but he can’t stick the landing…unless it’s on his noggin, which it so often is. Daisy Mae and her brother are in almost constant rounds of fisticuffs, and we wonder (again!) how mother bears do it. Really. How? 🤔 The cubs are offered the same menu as brothers Shadow and Casper, and eat heartily, probably expending the calories they consume by beating the porridge out of their roommates. If play is learning, then these guys are scholars. 🐻🎓🐻 🎓🐻🎓

Last night, Peeps, our smallest cub, decided Baby Not-a-Polar Bear (BNAPB) was making too much noise and kicked him out of her Cub Cave. She had words with him after breakfast, then went back to bed. She sleeps a lot but is eating her Cubby Porridge, taking her vitamins, and using her Climby Thing to practice. Good little bear! 🐻 🐻‍❄️

ABR Daily Update-April 14, 2024-Our Six Cubs 🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻

Weather: 69F (21C) Humidity 46%, Sunny 🌞

We have six two-month-old black bear cubs in residence:

Peeps Bear - Female - The Recovery Center - Rooms #1 & #2

Daisy Mae Bear - Female - Hartley House - Room #2
Duke Bear - Male - Hartley House - Room #2
Jellybean Bear - Male - Hartley House - Room #2

Casper Bear - Male - Hartley House - Room #1
Shadow Bear - Male - Hartley House - Room #1

Peeps, our smallest and youngest cub, likely born near the end of the range of probable cub birthdates (January to mid-February), is doing well. Now that she’s out of The Cub Nursery and in larger rooms, Peeps has the space to show the curators what she can do. They’re watching to see if her strength and coordination improve over time, signifying continued, albeit later, development. The vets from UTCVM-University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine took a look at Peeps when they were at the facility for Twinkle and Tinsel’s release (bless our yearlings, wherever they are. 🐻🐻), and agreed Peeps is too small and wobbly to meet any of the cubs at this time. There’s no doubt the rowdy monsters in Hartley House are right on track; they’re all over the place, up and down. They eat like horses and play like devils, born as they were with The Rules of Cubby Fight Club written in their genes: First Rule: There are no rules. Mad as hatters, they are, mad as hatters.

At present, Peeps is content with her own company, and we hope with continued progress, she’ll meet Casper and Shadow soon.

So love ABR’s smile-and laugh-inducing explanations and commentary. I often visit when I just need a smile! (Of course, the cubbies are a real attraction, too!)

To whoever writes the commentary (Ben?): I just love it❣️ You have such an engaging style, caring and factual, with the right amount of humor thrown in. I think it makes our attachment to these bears even greater. Thank you for doing this for the cubs—and us.

April 13, 2024: Just The Cubs

Twinkle and Tinsel Bear are back in the wild where they belong. Now, there are six cubs of the year at Appalachian Bear Rescue. Six cubs of the year = CHAOS! And Daisy Mae, Duke, Jellybean, Peeps, Casper and Shadow don't disappoint! Enjoy the video of cubbies at play.

Thank you for posting this video of our beautiful cubs. Glad to see that Shadow and Casper got to move to a bigger “apartment”. Little Peeps still has some work to do on her coordination skills but she will get there. Jellybean, Daisy Mae and Duke seem to be well settled in as well. I pray that Tinsel and Twinkle did well during their first hours back in the wild. 🙏🏻🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️

Thank you so much for sharing this precious video of all 6 Bear Cubs! 🧸🩷🧸🩵🧸🩵🧸🩷🧸🩵🧸🩵 It is good to see them all playing and learning to do bear things. 😍 Continue prayers that they all get stronger! 🙏 I miss seeing Twinkle 🐻and Tinsel Bear 🐻 but I'm also glad that they're out in the wild where they do belong. May God protect them out there in the Nature. 🙏

Thanks for the video of the cubbies, love watching them with all that energy. Miss Twinkle and Tinsel though, can't help it, it's like they were apart of my life for awhile. I found myself talking about them last night at ten o clock when my hubby and I took our dog for his walk before bedtime. I pray they live long and safe.

Wild & Free the way it's meant to be. Good Luck to our little Christmas 🐻 Tinsel ✨️

I cry every time I watch these releases🥲so happy for the bears, a little sad we won’t get to watch their antics and hopeful they have a happy, joyful, and long life

It's always a good day when the little bears get back to where they belong. Thank you ABR for all you do to save & return these wonderful creatures back into the wild.

Oh Twinkle, run wild and free!

It makes me sad every time I watch these releases, knowing we will no longer see these cubs, who we've watched heal, grow and become independent. At the same time, it brings me joy, to know that they did in fact, heal, grow and become independent, and are able to be released back into the wild where they belong. Tears of sadness, yet tears of joy at the same time. Again, thank you ABR for all you do. God Bless you Twinkle and may you have a long, healthy life.

ABR Daily Update-April 11, 2024-Our Mission is Nearly Over 🐻🐻

Weather: 71F (22C) Humidity 79%, Showers☔️

Peeps Bear, our smallest cub in residence, is adjusting to her spacious new quarters in The Recovery Center. She's an energetic little thing and likes exercising her "up" gene on the climbing structure. She seems better coordinated than she was only two days ago and has a good appetite.

Peeps reminds us of Doodlebug Bear, though she's in much better health than Doodle was when she arrived. Like Doodle, Peeps needs company, but she's still too small to meet the other cubs. If all goes well, the curators hope to introduce her to Casper and Shadow, but that will have to wait until she's a little bigger... or until she runs out of patience with her solitary confinement. Just give us a little more time, Peeps, so you can hold your own in "Cubby Fight Club."🐻🤞

Our mission with yearlings Twinkle and Tinsel is nearing its end. Curators Haley and Katrina placed some tasty treats in Acclimation Pen #4 to entice them to come inside. Once they've entered, the curators will lower the gate, and the bears will be confined to the pen for safer immobilization on release day.

Thank you for helping our bears on their journey back to the wild.🐻🐻

I am going to miss those 2 girls, but I am happy they are healthy and can be released!

Gonna miss my Twinkle Bear(and Tinsel of course). We were one of the ones that saw her in the park, clinging to a tree soaking wet, destined for your loving care, Rangers in route. Enjoyed watching her not only grow, but thrive.

ABR Daily Update-April 10, 2024-Peeps Moves! 🐻🤗

Weather: 65°F (18°C) Humidity 72%, Cloudy ☁️

We apologize for the late post today. Rest assured, the only bears that moved into, out of, or around the facility today was Miss Peeps Bear. 🐻

Peeps mobility has continued to improve and recently she has exhibited “graduation behavior” to the Curators. In the Cub Nursery, this means climbing up the walls - literally! Today, she was moved from the Cub Nursery to the Recovery Center. This will allow her ample space to continue refining her mobility and climbing skillsets, while also allowing Curators to further minimize their contact with Peeps as she grows. She now weighs just under 4 pounds! We are very happy for her.

All of the other cubs and bears at the facility are doing well. We will feature them in tomorrow’s update. 😊

Did you find Shadow’s other sibling yet?

I was thinking when I watched the video yesterday and saw how she kept pulling up on the doors that she was wanting to have more room. So happy she has moved to her “new suite!” 🤣

I know eventually they all have to go back to the place they were found but it never gets easier to see them leave....I often think about Doodlebug and wonder how she fared

It's a happy day seeing them run from their transport containers to freedom. It really gets me when some stop and turn around as to say goodbye. I also think of Tater and Doodlebug a lot. Hope they are doing well.

Thinking it's Release Day.
