The secrets of superb public speaking

A crippling fear of public speaking has probably shorted out more promising careers than any other single factor. In today’s high-stress environment, top performers are expected to be able to address shareholder meetings, do real-time podcasts and live TV, take part in panel discussions and speak to groups of all sizes, whether in key pitches or at large industry functions.

A lot of executives have paid a lot of money to try to shake off the discomfort. Most public speaking coaches advise them to be formulaic, to plan the speech, carefully pacing the delivery and taking calculated pauses while methodically sweeping their gaze from one side of the audience to the other. We’ve all sat through speeches like that. Guess what? It doesn’t work. The best-case scenario is the speaker gets through the event without bolting. But chances are they were somewhat short of dynamic, leaving most listeners glazed over and surreptitiously checking their watches.

John Miers, a former nuclear submarine commander and frequent media spokesman for the Royal Navy, has developed a radically different approach to speaking. It involves teaching you how to use emotional intelligence to engage a crowd, ensuring your message gets across and your words actually have an impact.

John has successfully taught his method to senior international executives, to top politicians and to Olympic athletes. He has now published the program in a book.

“Hit me again I can still hear him! The secrets of superb public speaking” explains the steps in simple, straightforward terms, mapping out the strategy to becoming less self-conscious and more natural while communicating.

The book is an indispensable tool for all those who want not just to speak, but to be heard.

John Miers

Photo: John MiersThroughout a varied and challenging career in the Royal Navy, in which he rose to submarine command, John developed an incredible understanding of human communication. Frequently a Royal Navy media spokesman and having been part of the production team during a major TV series, John founded Black Isle in 1990 in order to share his experiences and understanding in order to develop effective communication within a business environment.

John's approach disagrees with a great deal of conventional wisdom concerning presentation and personal impact. He builds on the uniqueness of personality and helps people perform at their natural best in any situation.

This highly individual and successful approach has allowed John to expand Black Isle across four continents and to seven offices around the world. As well as coaching numerous politicians in North America and Europe, John has helped many senior executives and public figures perform more effectively in high profile appointments

What others are saying

Review from the "South China Morning Post", August 2nd 2009:

Perhaps it was two decades in the "silent service" that made John Miers so keen to talk. The former submarine commander in, and later media spokesman for, Britain's Royal Navy went on to coach politicians and other public figures in the tricks of the personal-appearance trade, teaching them how to avoid boring audiences into a coma while ensuring their message was remembered. >> read the full review

John Miers has written the definitive narrative on speaking in public in
this concise and very readable book. This is not only a practical guide
to the essential elements of public speaking, but also offers unique
insights into personal development and achieving greater levels of self
confidence, in general ... In my view this is a must read for anyone aspiring to further develop a career in business, politics, or any responsible position of
influence in today’s world.
Jeremy Hobbins, CEO, LiFung Trinity

What took you so long to write the book? 16 years ago, as chairman
of an international investment bank, I disliked public speaking. John
Miers, through his simple and logical approach allowed me the luxury
of actually enjoying public speaking.

(World leader in hybrid electric commercial vehicles)
