Content management system, the ultimate tool to building your own website!

Everything is going online. Brick and mortar stores are becoming more and more obsolete while e-commerce businesses are popping up everywhere around the globe. Klaus Schwab is the leader of the world economic forum. Here, business leaders from all over the world come together to discuss global trends. So if someone is able to know the direction the world is heading in it is Klaus. He even wrote a book: the fourth industrial revolution. According to him the world is preparing for another global revolution which will change the way we live. The internet will become even more dominant than in today’s day and age. People are even calling data the new gold. So, what I’m trying to say is that if you don’t do business online you’re screwed!

Sadly not everyone is an expert with regard to the internet. While this doesn’t have to be a problem, a lot of business owners have low confidence in their online skills and therefore don’t make use of the possibilities the internet has to offer. However, having your own website and maintaining it regularly isn’t that difficult at all. If you want to build your own website for your business, or maybe for some other purpose, you should go ahead and do it. The only thing you need is a good content management system!

A good content management system, what is it?

If you think that you need to be Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos to build your own website your wrong. While it’s true that computers involve a lot of programming, this doesn’t mean that you need to know everything if you want to have your own website. If you visit YouTube, or use Word to write something, or if you play a videogame, all these things involve complicated coding. However you never have to use ICT skills to engage in these types of activity, right? Every app, game or other computer programme consists of a frontend and a backend. You will only experience the front end, the interface that you use. What’s going on behind the scenes, you don’t know. With websites it’s the same.

If you use a content management system (cms), you don’t have to learn python, java or JavaScript. You even don’t have to learn HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), which is the programming language used to alter webpages. If you have a good content management system, you only have to use that. Luckily learning how a cms works is quite easy, it’s just like learning how Word operates, everyone can do it. The only thing you might need some help with is installing the cms and setting it up the right way. A professional can give you a head start, after that you can do all the work on your own if that pleases you.

A content management system gives you the opportunity to upload texts and also to create the layout of the page. You can write what you want and put it anywhere you want on your website. In this manner you have complete control of what your customers will read. Furthermore you can use a type of layout that forms a good combination with your brand and with the content on your webpages. For example if you own a store that uses certain colours, you can make sure that your website has the same, to create coherence between your online and offline business.

Which content management system should you use?

There are different types of content management systems. It can be difficult to choose the right one. The most popular worldwide is WordPress. Another famous one is Joomla. I will discuss the pros and cons of both, so you can make the best decision if you’re thinking about using one of them.

First of all WordPress is the most used worldwide. This has a huge advantage, because whenyou have a question about something it’s likely that someone else also uses WordPress so you can ask him or her for help. Also if you have a new employee, changes are good that he or she will have some experience working with WordPress so you don’t have to train them. Furthermore there are tons of templates you can use if you have WordPress as content management system. With use of these templates you don’t have to spend a lot of effort on the layout. Thirdly, WordPress is extremely easy to use. You don’t have to waste a lot of time learning, you can almost immediately start working on your website.

Joomla is another great content management system. What does Joomla has to offer that WordPress doesn’t? Joomla has a lot of  build-in features, while WordPress often requires you to download extra plugins. Furthermore the database model of Joomla is way better than the one Wordpress uses. Wordpress database model is very simple, if you have huge amounts of data, this can lead to an unclear situation. However, Joomla is more difficult to use than WordPress. So, if you’re new to control management systems you’re probably better of using WordPress.
