The second brightest star in the constellation, located at the hunters “right shoulder” as he faces the observer, is Betelgeuse (pronounced Bet-el-jews, not Beetle-juice), from Arabic (bat al-jawzāʾ), which means “the giant's shoulder.” Betelgeuse is a massive M1-type red supergiant semi-regular variable star nearing the end of its life.
