Moving House During Pregnancy

Finding out you a pregnant with your first baby is one of life’s most joyful experiences, you and your husband may be overwhelmed with emotion and a million thoughts going through your mind.  There are so many things to be done whilst pregnant and ensuring you do everything you can to ensure a fit and healthy baby girl or boy is no doubt on the top of the list.

Once the initial excitement has past and you have settled into your routine, counting the number of weeks and organizing appointments with your obstetrician, you may ask yourself whether you have enough space for your family.  In our case, living in an apartment was barely enough.  Our ideal home would have a large backyard, three to four bedrooms to allow us enough room to raise our family. Here are some tips I have found useful when moving during pregnancy.

Be organized

Stress and anxiety is often associated with moving house, add a pregnant women and that’s a recipe for disaster.  As soon as you have decided to move, come up with a moving date and get organized. If you’re planning on moving interstate then it’s probably best to fly to your destination rather than drive. You’ll probably need services for interstate car transport to help move your car to you.  On the other hand, moving local can be deceiving and seem to be an easy task, however if your husband is thinking of saving a little bit of money and moving himself, it is seriously not a good idea. I would definitely recommend using a removalist.

Pack well in advance

Give yourself plenty of time to pack in advance, pregnancy can make you more tired and you probably won’t have the same stamina.  Pack a little each time and a little each day, begin with the items you don’t require until you’ve settle in your new home.  It may seem odd packing away items two months before moving date but you’ll be glad when it’s the week of your move and all you have to do is collect your toiletries.

Take all the help you can get

If family and friends offer to help, take them up on it. Standing and moving around all day with swollen feet is not a pleasant feeling.  Allowing people to help can shrink your to do list in half, having the support there will enable a better moving experience and there is only so much physical work you can do alone.

Rejuvenate your body

A lot of energy is involved in any move, and being pregnant can be exert even more energy. It is essential to look after your body during any moving event.  When you are feeling stressed or notice a bit more anxiety coming along, take some time out for yourself. Make an appointment for a gentle massage, allocate yourself some extended nap times or organize a spa indulgent therapy session.

What Can You Expect When Becoming a New Mother?

For those of you who are expecting your first child, you may feel a bit anxious, feel a bit confused and feel overwhelmed at the whole situation.  Becoming a mum is a tough job but it is also the most rewarding job in the world.  There will be highs and there will be lows, it’s just all part of the gig, so hang on tight and enjoy the ride.  Here’s what you can expect when becoming a new mother:

Sleep deprivation

Everybody has probably told you that you’ll be expecting a lack of sleep through the night, but the same is also true during the day.  As a new born predominantly eats and sleeps for the first few weeks, you can expect to be woken from a cry every two hours to breast or bottle feed. As they gradually grow, your baby will eventually sleep longer and settle at about the three month.  To tackle sleep deprivation, it is a good idea to get some shut eye when you baby goes to sleep during the day, that way you’ll have a chance to rest your body before the battle begins again.

Short showers

The days of relaxing in a bath with a glass of red wine next to you are over, long showers are never to be seen again, well for the next eight years at least.  You will find that with a newborn, time is quickly absorbed; you’ll have less and less time for yourself.  You are always keeping an eye on where your baby is, you’re working around your baby and if you find a spare five minutes for yourself, you could probably have a short three minute shower.  It is achievable with the aid of a bassinet and musical mobile, but that all changes when they fine tune their mobility skills.

Body transformation

Forty weeks of pregnancy and giving birth puts a lot of strain on any women’s body.  Stretchmarks, weight gain and excess skin are all common after pregnancy and affects us differently.  Don’t be too hard on yourself, being a mum is the ultimate sacrifice and putting your baby’s needs before your own. Be confident with who you are and know that you are not alone, there are many mums out there who have been through this and come out stronger.

Demand for flexibility

As stated earlier, everything evolves around your baby and work is no different. The last time you have worked is probably a while; you may have taken 6 months off, a year off or probably still off work.  Between caring for your baby, attending scheduled health check-ups and contemplating whether it is worth putting your child in expensive childcare, you would want flexibility in your work.  For the most part, unless working from home, not many professions may provide for this flexibility and that’s ok. It may mean a longer period away from work than intended but at least you won’t be missing all those important milestones that can go by in a blink of an eye.
