How to: make beachy waves using a clipless iron

Beachy waves tutorial
I have had a ton of people ask me about the waves I’ve been doing in my hair recently (I think mostly after this post!), so I finally managed to finish this beachy waves tutorial that I’ve been promising you all I would do. It’s my very first video how-to video so I’m still trying to navigate my way around how I’ll do them going forward. But can I just say that making this video was NOT as easy as I hoped it would be? That’s largely due to the fact that my editing program decided to suck halfway through and just NOT work, but it took two trips to the Apple store, three hours, and about six guys at the Genius bar before we successfully were able to import the last bit of footage.just.for.you.
Jose Eber Clipless Iron, available at folica.com

Here’s what you need:
– Wide-tooth comb
– A 25 mm clipless iron (I use Jose Eber’s Pro Series available at folica.com)
– One hair clip (or more if you have thicker hair). I use TS-2 styling clips.
– Heat protectant spray. I use Turbo Power Forma Thermal Lotion
– A flexible hair spray, like Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly

Directions:

1. Using a wide-tooth comb, comb through your hair and make sure to smooth out any tangles. This will make things a lot easier when it’s time to curl!

2. Pull the top layer of your hair back and twist in a bun. Secure with a hair clip. If your hair is thicker, you might need to break this up in two sections and clip separately.

3. Spray entire area to be curled with the heat protectant spray.

4. Grab a small section to be curled. You can do this in any random order, but I find the easiest way to do this is to start from the back.

5. Hold the iron with the barrel pointing down. Wrap the hair around the iron. (Tip: Try not to wrap it flat, rather let the hair remain rounded as you wrap it around the barrel). Hold on to the tip of the hair as it heats for about 10 seconds or so.

6. Keep holding on to the hair as you gently remove the iron and let your hair fall by itself. Don’t tug at your hair. Repeat to curl the entire section the same way.

7. Afterwards, let another section of your hair loose from your clip. Tie any remaining hair up again. Begin curling the new section the same way.

8. For bangs, I like to hold my iron slightly more horizontal for a softer wave (but still pointing down).

9. After you’re done curling all of your hair, use your fingers to brush out the waves gently.

10. To finish, use a flexible hair spray to mist your hair lightly at the end.

TIP #1: If you have a lot of frizz, I would apply a little anti-frizz serum on your hair before starting. I LOVE Sedu’s Anti-Frizz Polishing Treatment with Argan Oil. I think everyone should own this actually (post to come about its awesomeness soon).

TIP #2: If you’re hair doesn’t hold a curl well, I’d also mist a flexible hair spray BEFORE curling EACH section. I’m stressing using a flexible hair spray as opposed to a stronger one because you want your curls to still look bouncy and not stiff for this look (that would actually be the OPPOSITE of the beachy waves look you’re going for here!).

TIP #3: You can get the same waves using a regular curling iron — l just think the clipless has been the easiest tool I’ve used to get these waves. But if you ARE using a curling iron, make sure the clamp is closed and wrap your hair OVER the clamp to get these waves. If this makes a little bump in your curl where the clamp is, another way to do this is to keep the clamp open the whole time, and wrap your hair around the barrel. This will make a smoother curl. Again, it’s just easier with the clipless I think. But that’s just me.

AND, if none of that made any sense to you, here’s the video tutorial :). Let me repeat, this is the first video tutorial I’ve ever done, so um please be a little understanding? Thanks.

x
Shy

Beautifull! I’ve been doing this look with a curling iron and you’re totally right, the handle for the clamp gets in the way a lot, it looks so much easier w/o the clamp! Awesome job on the video!

    hey shy,
my hair is super straight and fine and anytime i get it curled the stylists have to spray tons of hairspray and it just always ends up looking limp after 15 min. you think this will work on my hair too and stay without that rough hairspray look?

Qkhan: had the SAME problem with my hair, even though it’s not super straight/fine as you say yours is…it’s just fussy. For some reason, when I try doing the same thing with a curling iron, it doesn’t really hold the curl, but this holds it quite well. I can’t make any guarantees, but with fine hair it should work.

Another thing, before I discovered this, the only other way a curl would stay in my hair is if I use a flat iron (really!). You have to run it through your hair like you would curl ribbon and it was the only thing before the clipless that held any sort of curl in my hair. Maybe if you have a flat iron already, you can try that. I was wanting to make a video about this but in the interim, you can check this video out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgUt31h_jag
