Greg Jones Part Of Young Linebacker Group Aiming To Impress

During his post-practice press conference Wednesday New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin praised the work done thus far by many of his team's young linebackers.

"They've been aggressive and noteworthy in their play. Sometimes they're in the wrong spot or something, but they recover and they seem to be able to go and make some things happen," Coughlin said. "I like the way they're running around. ... I like their attitude."

One of those young linebackers is sixth-round pick Greg Jones, a middle linebacker from Michigan State. Jones, incidentally, wearing a very special number when it comes to the history of Giants linebackers -- especially middle linebackers. He has the 53 jersey once worn by Hall of Fame middle linebacker Harry Carson.

"My focus and my goal right now is to just really understand the playbook to the best of my ability and going out on the field and performing," Jones said.

Jones admitted that he feels behind in his learning curve due to NFL Lockout.

"Talking to some of the older guys they had OTAs and things like that to get acclimated to the defense. We didn't," Jones said. "We are behind the eight-ball a little bit."

Jones understands that the coverage teams is where he can expect to begin his Giants' career.

"I want to impact special teams in the biggest way possible," he said. "That's where I feel like I am going to get a lot of opportunities."

Jones is part of a suddenly crowded group at middle linebacker. The incumbent is, of course, Jonathan Goff. Last year's fourth-round pick, Phillip Dillard, is a middle linebacker. The Giants have also been working undrafted free agent Mark Herzlich in the middle.

Jones discussed the young, competitive group of linebackers the Giants suddenly possess. On the outside, 2009 second-round pick Clint Sintim is expected to start. Adrian Tracy, a 2010 sixth-round pick, and Kenny Ingram, have been among the players also getting reps on the strong side.

"We all are very motivated. When we approach the field we all see an opportunity," Jones said. "I believe in this team and I feel like this is going to be something big and I want to be a part of it."

An avid sight-seer, Jones said he still has not really had an opportunity to explore New York City.

"I've gotta take care of business first," Jones said.

If he can take care of that business Jones will have the rest of the season -- and maybe a few seasons after that -- to explore New York City in great detail.
