CIVIL WAR PETTY OFFICER'S PATCH
There were few to no insignias worn by regular US sailors prior to 1866. This was one of the few exceptions. Worn by all Petty Officers it was up to the sailor to know who was who on his ship. The only distinction being regulations required some to wear it on the right sleeve, such as boatswains, gunners, carpenters and sailmakers, ship's stewards and cooks. SAILOR'S STRAW HATJust how does it work? Well we have lined the bottom of the brim with black 100% cotton cloth, that absorbs light rays, i.e. the glare reflecting off the water (or any other surface for that matter). Then we sew in a leather sweat band which adds much to the comfort, to finish it off we edge the brim with cotton ribbon - just as all well made period correct hats are finished. There is a very good picture of this hat in Echoes of Glory page 164. These buckles were also very popular with militias both north and south as they were inexspensive.
