Video: How to format, convert and preview your Kindle book using free software without needing a Kindle reader

August 05, 2011
Printer-Friendly Format

This short video shows the quick and easy way to write, format, convert and preview your Kindle book, using free software. And even if you don't have a Kindle reader, you can use this technique to see exactly how your book will look on a Kindle reader

If you've been reluctant to write a book for Kindle out of concern that the formatting or conversion to Kindle will be too much work, you'll want to view the short video below.

In this video, you'll see the entire process, from start to finish. I use free software for each step, and you'll be how amazed at how easy the process can be.

Note that in the video I show parts of the novel I've just finished writing, and the cover artwork I show is just a place-holder. It's not what I'll be using on the final version of the book.

To view the video, click on the video below.

As noted in the video, I use the free Open Office Writer program to write my novel. You can find the settings I use at My Open Office Writer Settings for Kindle.

To convert my book into Kindle format, I use the free Calibre conversion program. You can learn more about it in my article at Using Calibre to convert your book to Kindle format.

To see what your converted book will look like even if you don't have a Kindle reader, you can use the free Kindle Previewer reader that can be downloaded at http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000234621
