Zirconium is a lustrous, grayish-white, soft, ductile, and malleable metal which is solid at room temperature, though it becomes hard and brittle at lower purities. Due to its highly resistance to corrosion by alkalis, acids, salt water, and other agents, zirconium is extensively used as an alloying agent.
Commercial-quality zirconium for most uses still has a content of 1% to 3% hafnium.
