PLEASE NOTE

Throughout this section and the website you will find that all Messerschmitt built aircraft are designated with the "Bf" prefix and not the "Me" prefix as many historians and reference works often use.

All aircraft developed by Messerschmitt before the founding of Messerschmitt A.G. in 1938 had, and retained, the Bf designation throughout the war. The 108, 109 and 110 were never designated anything other than Bf.
'Baureihenzusammenstellung in der Luftwaffe eingeführten Flugzeug' of March 10th 1942 (which is a compilation of the versions of aircraft introduced to the Luftwaffe) the 109 variants from B to G-1 are shown as Bf as is the 110 from B-1 to F-4.

The change from Bf to Me came between the Bf163 (which did exist & fly) and the Me210. All Luftwaffe Manuals for both the 109 and the 110 cite Bf in the aircraft type but those for the 163, 210 etc., cite Me.
However, just to confuse the issue a bit, in Messerschmitt A.G. reports, the 109G and K are often referred to with the Me designator. [1]

Although many of our great historians use the prefix 'Me', this is probably because many of the official records of the Royal Air Force use the 'Me' prefix and not  'Bf', this is possibly because of political overtones at the time.

It is for this reason that the prefix 'Bf' is used throughout this website.
