Sudden decrease in milk supply at 4 months
« on: June 11, 2011, 17:12:21 pm »
Has anyone experienced a sudden drop in milk supply - for no reason??

I have been BF exclusively for the last 4 months, then suddenly my LO started waking up every 3 hours in the night for a feed. I figured she wasn't getting enough feed during the day so I expressed to see how much milk I'm producing and I'm struggling to get more than 50 ml at any time during the day. I should add that I've had more than enough milk before and at any time I've been able to express 100-150ml from both sides and occasionally up to 250ml!!! I've started to feed more regularly to try and get the supply up but it still seems to be in short supply, I don't want to have to start formula feeding just yet.

Has anyone suggestions as to what it could be?

Thanks.

at this age, and at this time in your bfing relationship you may not be as sensitive to the pump.

It is most probably the 4 mth GS. I found it the worst of all of them, both times!

For me, I hated waiting for the GS to end and loved to find "something to do" to fix it quicker -and as my two were already STTN consistenly from 3 mths and earlier even, I wasn't willing to go back to sleepless nights for me and them.

My daughter also had an unclipped yet diagnosed tongue tie at this moment (was clipped just shy of 5 mths) so she was hopelessly distracted and not at all able to deal with GSs alone, without the help of the pump.

When I saw tiny signs of the GS coming - hungry after 2/2.5 hrs etc....and tetchiness or NWing....I just started pumping on empty at the end of every feed, all day, every day, for around 3 or 4 days. Whatever I managed to pump -day 1 probably a couple of oz for the whole day, day 2 around an oz after each feed, day 3 2 oz and so on, I used to top off the most important feed first (for us it was the 7pm feed as it was the most distracted or OTd) and later when I had an oz or two after every feed, I used the milk after every feed.

By day 5, we were back to breast only and I had signs of fullness in breast, engorgement etc.

If you do use this method, don't be put off by pumping and getting nothing out. It really took a day of 15 mins pumping each side after each feed with nothing at all coming out before I was able to get an oz or so each pumping the second day....

This was the worst GS as they need much more at this age and can't get have solids....and I was used to, or getting used to, STTN as well ;-)

After this, I never really noticed GSs in terms of bfeeding as for the 6 mth spurt we were on solids....

I had this happen at ~3.5mo, but I think mine was related to taking an antibiotics for mastitis.  I, too, had the crazy drop in the amount I was able to pump: from 6 oz combined to maybe 1.5.  Plus, I didn't get the let-down feeling or the engorgement anymore.

Here's a link to my thread (don't worry about your situation being like mine, but there are lots of good tips):

Hope those tips help a bit :)  Good luck, hon!

Did you start your menstrual cycle?  I had a big supply drop after I started mine when my first son was 3 months old.  Just let the "schedule" go by the waist side and just nurse nurse nurse as much as you can.  Sometimes it's a growth spurt, sometimes it just happens because they're starting to sleep longer at night.

I had this at 4mths.  I spoke to my LC at the time (long time ago now!).  At around 4mths your homone levels start to go back the the levels pre-preg including the hormone that ensure that you have milk 'on tap'.  Your body is becoming more used to making milk and will still be making milk but more 'on demand' in a way.  So continue to feed.  The growth spurt is massive at 4mths to ensure that baby continues to feed and milk produced.

I've not explained it very well.  This 'drop' is one of the reasons why people at around 4mth used to think that their baby was hungry and needed solids.  It's just a different BF relationship that is developing from those early baby days.  so not necessarily a decrease in supply - just a different supply KWIM?
