Arizona Wildcats forward Kevin Parrom was shot Saturday morning during a domestic dispute that involved a "jealous boyfriend or ex-boyfriend," according to the basketball blog ZagsBlog.com.
Adam Zagoria reported Sunday night that Parrom is in stable condition after being shot in the leg in his home and grazed in his hand. Parrom reportedly told his former AAU coach, Gary Charles, "I'm good. I'm walking," according to SNY.tv, who said Charles spoke with Parrom on Sunday.
The Arizona athletic department released the following statement from AD Greg Byrne and UA head coach Sean Miller late Sunday night:
Director of athletics Greg Byrne:
"We are aware that Kevin Parrom went home this weekend to visit his mother, who is in the hospital. While in New York City, he was the victim of a shooting. Rest assured, Kevin's well being is our primary concern."Mens basketball coach Sean Miller:
"I have been in contact with Kevin and his family throughout the weekend and look forward to his return to Tucson and being back in class this week. Our focus is on Kevins health right now. Once we have more information, well be able to address his potential return to team activities."
Charles told Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star, ""I can tell you this: His voice sounded like regular. It wasn't like, `Oh, coach, my god, I can't believe this.' "
Per Zagoria:
"He was shot one time in the right leg. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition.
"He was with a woman and two people came to that location and knocked on the door. They followed him into a bedroom and shot him with a 22-caliber handgun. No one else was in the apartment when he was shot."
Parrom, who averaged 7.6 points per game and 3.4 rebounds over the course of last season, was visiting his mother in The Bronx, New York. In the days leading up to the weekend, Parrom tweeted, "Going Home 2mro To Make Sure My Mother Is Staying Strong . . #familyfirst "
A second unnamed source told Zagoria that the dispute was over a woman who was visiting Parrom. The supposed jealous man brought another man, who was carrying a gun. After a wrestling match with Parrom after entering the home, the man shot a bullet that grazed Parrom's hand and then his leg.
