The inaugural Naval Defence Exhibition (NAVDEX), running in parallel with the 10th Anniversary edition of the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX), is proving its gravitas as a worthy partner for the region's leading and largest tri-service defence exhibition.
Opening its doors for the first time to the some 50,000 exhibitors attending IDEX and NAVDEX this week; NAVDEX features exciting live demonstrations, as well as on and off water exhibits from over 80 companies.
Major features of this inaugural edition include live demonstrations, as well as the presence of naval ships including the UAE's Baynunah Corvette; the UK's HMS Pembroke and France's FS Croix du Sud. Beyond warships and demos, exhibits on display include naval workboats and amphibious crafts; fighting equipment; anti-piracy and coastal security systems; and communication solutions.
Live demonstrations this year consist of individual boat demonstrations, anti-terrorism underwater defence, and the official NAVDEX daily demonstration.
Individual boat demonstrations will continue through Thursday. Abu Dhabi Marine will be displaying the quickest vessel with their 15 meter fast interceptor craft capable of speeds in excess of 70 knots. Al Fatan will present their 14.5 meter, 50 knot patrol boat in service with the UAE coast guard. Other participants will include Bin Halil, Cat Group and Great Expectations, each bringing their manoeuvrable 6-7 meter range patrol craft.

At 12pm and 2pm daily, a group of UK companies will present an innovative new demonstration highlighting a range of sophisticated equipment involved in preventing diver attack on a vessel alongside. This dynamic display, entitled "Operation Swimmer," will take place surrounding the HMS Pembroke and involve divers attacking a ship defended by booms, diver detection sonar and noisemakers. This demonstration will last for about 20 minutes and can be observed from HMS Pembroke, berthed at the middle of the NAVDEX pavilion.

Organised by NAVDEX, two sessions of formal water demonstrations (FWD) take place daily. As part of the FWD, all vessels involved in the exhibition will sail in unison past the ADNEC grandstand before breaking off for a series of short individual demonstrations. Following this procession, the UAE Navy will demonstrate live amphibious landing techniques on the beach across the grandstand.

Looking at the exhibitors themselves; as home to the region's largest ship building industry, UAE-built interceptor craft and blue water cruising vessels are filling increasingly central roles in anti-piracy and costal defence applications. Notable UAE companies exhibiting include Abu Dhabi Ship Building, the Gulf's leading ship builders and builders of the Baynunah Corvette; Abu Dhabi Mar, with two industry-leading fast interceptor craft berthed in the marina; and Dubai-based Stellar Composites, which manufactures and maintains a range of civilian and defence vessels.
Major new technologies on display this year from leading global manufacturers and suppliers include vessel arrest and security barrier systems by HALO Maritime Defense Systems, Geobrugg AG and Cortland; communications and management solutions by L-3 MAPPS, Babcock, Raytheon and OSI Geospatial; as well as a range of technologies designed to prevent diver attack on a vessel alongside.

The success of the first two days at NAVDEX 2011 has set the tone for a strong inaugural edition of what is now the region's largest exhibition dedicated to naval defence and security.
